Cake (2018)

Country:  Pakistan
Director:  Asim Abbasi
Cast:  Aamina Sheikh, Sanam Saeed, Adnan Malik & Syed Mohammad Ahmed.
Zareen, the middle daughter lives with her parents in Pakistan, while older brother Zain and younger sister Zara pursue their lives in New York and London, respectively. After a long time, the family reunites when their father suffers from congestive heart failure.
The story may look different, but the basic theme reminds me of the Bollywood movie 'Kapoor & Sons'. Like Bol (2011), You can see plenty of female-centric Pakistani films where women make more sense than men. Cake can be also added to the list of movies that move away from the image of an alpha male and Still Bol (2011) holds the number one position of that category. The mystery content or the Jamali family secrets can be easily predictable unless you are Zara. Overall, It was selected as the Pakistani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and this cake is delicious to have if you consider family as your first priority.
Verdict: Good

Bol (2011) - 165 min

Country:  Pakistan
Director:  Shoaib Mansoor
Cast:  Manzar Sehbai, Atif Aslam, Iman Ali, Mahira Khan & Humaima Malik.
It tells the story of Hakeem Sahab's ideology and his quest to have a son. Hakeem's wife gives birth to fourteen children, including seven daughters and a transgender son Saifi. Hakeem hates his family and the one he hates most is poor Saifi.
It's an inside look into the lives of a family living in Pakistan and showing the incredible fact of how they manages to survive day to day life. More than a story, it's about the family emotions that come to play during the tough times. Full credits go to the director, Shoiab to choose a controversial subject and asking an important question towards the end. The fact of Atif Aslam acting in the movie forces me to see this film in the first place and he performs one of his songs in the movie too. The character of Hakeem was offered to Naseeruddin Shah, unfortunately due to date issues he turns it down. Overall, it's a movie that actually challenges the system by breaking the so called old customs of living style.
Verdict: Great

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani (2015) - 155 min

Jawani Phir Nahi Ani is a Pakistani comedy film directed by Nadeem Beyg.
Starring Humayun Saeed, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Ahmad Ali Butt, Vasay Chaudhry, Ayesha Khan, Sarwat Gillani & Uzma Khan.
Sherry is a divorce lawyer who came to see his old childhood friends, finds out his friends changed a lot after their marriage. Moreover, they are afraid of their wives. So he plans a boys only trip to Bangkok to make their lives interesting.
It's a clean, entertaining movie which packed with glamour and a huge cast. Many scenes and situations of this movie reminds me of Bollywood movies like Housefull, No Entry and Grand Masti. Nadeem Baig's directional debut is saved by the ensemble cast and few funny moments. The humor scenes were safe in the hands of Ahmed Ali and Hamza. When it comes to actresses, they all look stunning in their own roles. Overall, if you are looking for an entertaining movie like No Entry, then you shouldn't miss this one.
Verdict: Average
